Los Angeles singer and songwriter Watson is still in need of some serious company with his “Dance Alone” follow-up single “Kitty Kitty,” available exclusively on Billboard today (May 28).
The song is admittedly inspired by a bout of celibacy that the rapper and singer, born Travis Galatte, says lasted “not a very long time, but it felt like a long time” and weighed heavily on him during a session to christen a new studio with featured producers Sakai and Sean Chapman.
The team cooks up a murkily charged head-thumper that veers from a dark pop and hip-hop structure to outright alt rock thanks to Watson’s grimey yet expressive delivery and Chapman’s lingering guitar melody. His wholehearted approach reaches a peak during the song’s bridge, which Watson recalls coming naturally by just “going in, close my eyes and loop [the instrumental], and then I just freestyle a little bit to see what happens.”

The finished track reflects some of Watson’s most natural tendencies, telling Billboard that “‘Dance Alone’ is cool, but I feel like this one’s more me…and it’s pretty groovy, you can dance to it.”
With two solo singles released, the rising songwriter, who contributed to both 21 Savage and Post Malone’s most recent albums, shifts the universal mindset that’s driven his craft thus far inward as he begins to deliver the message directly.
“I write for myself when I want to vent, but at the same time I’m writing for millions and millions of people that would relate,” he shares. “As far as writing for myself, the honesty is just at an all-time high.”
Watson’s debut EP Hallelujah I’m Free is set to drop in June.
